Major SSP Reforms Coming in April 2026: What UK Employers Need to Know
Big changes are on the horizon for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in the UK, set to take effect from April 2026. These reforms are part of the government’s broader “Plan for Change” to improve workers’ rights and boost economic productivity. For employers, this means it’s time to prepare.
What’s Changing?
- SSP from Day One
The current three-day waiting period will be scrapped. SSP will now be payable from the first day of illness, helping employees recover without financial stress. - No Earnings Threshold
The £125/week minimum earnings rule will be removed. This means up to 1.3 million low-paid workers who were previously excluded will now qualify for SSP. - Fairer Pay for Low Earners
Employees earning below the standard SSP rate will receive 80% of their average weekly earnings, or £118.75, whichever is lower. This ensures a more equitable safety net for those on lower incomes.
Why It Matters
These changes aim to reduce the pressure on sick employees to work while unwell, improve recovery outcomes, and support long-term workforce productivity. However, they also bring new responsibilities for employers.
What Employers Should Do Now
- Review employment contracts and sickness policies
- Update payroll systems to reflect new SSP calculations
- Train managers on the updated entitlements and procedures
